Black umbees

It's been an on going debate with the Black Gorillus species in the hobby for a while now. If you use the search bar function, it will pull up the threads.

As I said it's just a rumor I've heard and I've seen some strange looking gorillus "blacks" supposedly from there, I just thought you should be aware

I talked to Dan about the difference of Black Gorillus and Blue Gorillus and he said he took the DNA of both to a university and had the DNA tested.
The results said they were the same fish. (Remember we are not talking about the Blue freckled monster from Rio M.).
Could be like in other species, lets say red devils (or many others) where some are bright orange and others are bland.
Either way I ordered some from him and they are spectacular with lots of streaks on the face and a blue/black color. Very pleased!!!!
Only draw back is they are not aggressive like I thought they would be and my devils or jags or mota's killed some of them at the 6 inch mark. (Not sure who the killers were.)
Now I keep them separated with dividers.
Cheers!!

^^^i agree. Synspilum/melanerus are a good example of different fish with same DNA. On the other hand species variability could be at play here similar to the red devil example. One would need to show multiple examples of each from different collection points to establish reliable information. There is a lot of focus on the crater lake amphilophus complexes, and similar efforts may be required in order to have an accurate description of the different umbriferum complexes.

When they get a little bigger I will vent them.
Are there that many people getting wrongly labeled fish?
They better be right. From cichlids of the Americas.
might be able to get some help from Andy woods cichlids uk Andy woods cichlids uk , but IIRC, I was just reading him saying how difficult they are to sex and there's not a great reliable way to tell.....

mine are tiny and aggressive as hell. Honestly I can't wait to get a little size on them and then sell them. They are causing me such a head ache

Many heavy weight cichlids are aggressive as hell.
The trick to good fish keeping is to find out what works or doesn't work and still keep them alive.
More than one tank is needed and sometimes complete divider method is needed until you figure it out.
I stopped winning many years ago.........Lol
