Black water extract...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have thought of to acquire this extract to my rohm tank and I hope he will be less nervous/scared. I have not even turned on the lamps in the aquarium, but I am gone darkening the lamps down and turn in some black water extract and try. What do you think, will the fish feel more secure then?

I put some peat moss in a nylon stuck it in my sump and my RBP's love it they are much more comfortable and look a lot healthier .....also I heard that the peat lowers the PH and that may help them spawn.

I personally just add Kent Discus Essential to my tank. I don't like the brown water look. Discus Essential basically has all the same stuff as the black water extract but it doesn't affect the color of the water. It's also quite cheap $12 for 16 oz.

I have been wondering about this extract as well. Isn't the idea to darken the water for them to feel more comfortable? Or is it just the nutrients etc that have this effect?

I use to add this in my tank years ago and my fish stayed healthy then. Now I just put a large piece of driftwood and it seems to do the same.

Most waters where Piranhas come from are very stained - like tea. If you watched Jeremy Wade catch a Black Piranha on River Monsters, you may have noticed the colour of the water. Consequently, Piranhas eyesight evolved to these conditions and they aren't used to being able to see as far as they can in our aquarium environments - I think this is part of the reason they spook so easily. I like to see my fish so I don't generally use the amount on the directions but start around 1/4 - it's easier to add more than to take it out. Water changes will remove it so it's not like it's permanent; just remember the amount you like and then top-up during your water change. I think it adds depth, character and mystique to the display as well.

It's called Blackwater extract here in Canada and I have no algae issues. No phosphates on the label but who knows (Tetra site says ToruMin is phosphate free - looks like same bottle) perhaps I don't have issues since I use low lighting which most Piranhas prefer.

Maybe they reformulated. I analyzed the German variant some years ago (had university lab access), wrote Tetra a letter. They replied it was needed as stabilizer....
