The purple wolf is Erythrinus sp. Peru, It's alot like Erythrinus erythrinus, Rainbow wolf.
As already said Hoplias curupira is 'Black Wolf' realistically they will reach 15" - 16" in captivity. Could be more in the right environment. I can confirm that they are more active when provided with space. I tempararly had mine in a 48x20x24 and it wasn't until I moved him into a 8' that he became an active fish.
If you really want to get the most from a curupira then a 6'x2'x2' should be what you are looking at.
Unfortunatly no Hoplias species is going to be active in a 48". If I had a spare 48" I would probably do some sort of biotype with and Erythrinus and some small Dollar species, a Pike characin maybe. There is no magic monster fish out there thats super aggresive and stays small, generally you will always be disapointed if that is all you are looking for in a fish and you will get more in the long term from producing a predatory comm with alot more going on.
A group of exo's might be what your looking for, Have a look at Phago's
Another option as you are in Canada will be a small snakehead species, If you want something nasty although not very active - Channa bankanensis, A mix of Channa orientalis and cherry barbs would be a nice biotype, there are loads of options.
