thanks again kno4te , can you explain a little more about the lateral dotting your talking about ? i just put him in his new tank with all sand bottom no black gravel so i will try and get some more pics when he settles a little more if it could help ?

do you still think its mala moe ? im wanting to call the call back and tell him if it is . seeing as i paid like 3 or 4 times as much as i should have if it is mala . i seen the microlepis on below water list and if thats what it is as least i paid about what it is worth . but im not soo sure . what do you you think with the new pics do they confirm mala ? or maybe microlepis ? anyone?

If you can verify the location of where it was collected that'll help. Without leaves a problem. I think you have a nice mala. It's lightened up a lot and w/o the dotting pattern as well. If u search thru TUIC threads he also posted a Microlepis but had the dotting on it which is pretty obvious. This is retained even when lightens up. This is also seen on darker fish too but need a light and detailed pic. Yours doesn't have it. The green eyes can be seen on microlepis and some Malas too. Depends on where they were collected. Also supposed to have a spot on the cheek with two linear markings in the shape of a v but not touching. I don't see that. I also blew up ur recent pic and counted the lateral line scales and got about 40 give or take 1-2 and that makes it lean toward mala. I think if you want to return because it's not a black wolf then go ahead. Hopefully u get a resolution for this.

Well going off of this pic, the fish in question isn't a microlepis, which has 43-47 scales on the lateral line, this one has 38 if I counted correctly which I counted multiple times to make sure. Mala. I wish it was a micro, would be cool. And you've got something rarer than a curu lol. But try to get money back, or return it. Nice wolf though. I'd try to keep it and get some money back if it were me.

ok thank you very much for the help guys i will call the guy tonight after work . i do like the fish and will prob keep it . but ya maybe he will do something for me regarding i think i way over paid for a mala . he had a couple more as well which looked more different again then this guy . there were three of them all together in same tank .

get pictures maybe they're something different? and you can trade unless your content on keeping this one

called the guy , he was really good about it . im going to print off the pictures online of the bottom of the jaws to show how it defiantly isnt a black . he said we can net the others and check to see if they are blacks but im pretty sure now that none of them were blacks .

the interesting thing is i have been going over all kinds of wolf fish threads here now . learning tons about wolfs and im wondering if the other guys could have been hoplias lacerdae . because of body shape and the pattern along the lateral it was more blotchy and head shape . one in particular had that kind of flat head look , similar to an aimara only not quite that pronounced if you follow me . and no spot on the side like aimara .
but then what would the odds on that be lol prob just all mala but i will check and see when i go on saturday will let you know how it goes

edit
gotta say though that i do like this little guy he just ate his first meal since being here nice little chunk of tilapia :D

Nice to be able to trade him for something else. Keep in mind that u may want to consider a wolf that won't get to big that u cannot house properly. I think in all the excitement it can be overlooked. Im not a fan of seeing fish for sale in the marketplace and it's an obvious fish that can't be housed properly (pacu, rtc, etc).
