Black worms in filter

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you believe they are insect larvae of some sort...and the more often I view those pics, the more firmly I feel that they are not...then a dewormer isn't designed to do anything for you. Dewormers aren't even effective on all types of worms, so thinking that they will help you kill caterpillars (insect larvae) is not realistic. I just realized that "drain" fly might be an autocorrected version of "crane" fly. Crane flies look like mosquitoes, but are huge by comparison, many times bigger than skeeters. Thank goodness they don't bite. :) If that's not what you mean, what are "drain" flies?

If you don't want these critters living in your tank, a much better solution than reaching for a bottle of mysterious chemicals would be to simply deprive them of whatever it is that makes your tank attractive to them. In the case of almost all these suggested ID's, that would be excessive food and build-up of sludge and detritus in the tank.
By drain flies I mean Psychodidae.

That could also be it. Any way to get rid of them? Was told to try a dog dewormer
I wouldn't use a dewormer, your not guaranteed to kill them as others have said. I would just up the filter cleanings. Mainly mechanical filtration & do more water changes.

I've had them show up in my filter media from time to time.

Would it be possible to add a little minnow or crab to your sump and let them eat those worms

I would put your fish in a quarantine tank and just rinse the entire tank until no sign of the little worms are there.. Or you could add crabs or even a aqua frog to eat those worms

I am currently experiencing the same thing. Little black worms all twisted up into my filter but I noticed that I did not have this problem until I started feeding my fish vegetables like sweet potatoes and green peas. I cleared them all out. Changed the filter. Cleaned out the filter or the pump whatever it is. And I put some of these worms into a bowl trying to figure out what they are so I don't know. I was going to take them to the pet store but but I put them in a bowl + ed sweet potato and a pea to the bowl and all of them were instantly attracted to the food. So if you are feeding your fish any raw vegetables that could also be what's attracting them. Because I've had this tank going for over a year and I've never experienced it before. But I had to think about it and the only new thing that I had been doing was feeding my fish fresh food and then came the worms.
