Too much $$$ in a single commonly found fish. Well, not-so-common here in Brazil, but I wouldn't pay it anyway.

There is no way in he11 I would pay that kinda money for a blackbelt show fish or not. They got some babies at my lfs for like $5.99 for the price you are considering you could buy 10 a new tank to put them in and have a cpl bucks leftover for beer.
I concur with what everyone else is saying. I saw a large gourami today for $400. It wasn't attractive in any way to be honest. I would much rather raise one and have the joy of seeing it grow.
Even considering the cost of medications, food, and time raising the fish I don't think it would sum up to anything close to $500.

You could get some wild caught Paratheraps maculiada (sp) from Rapps, they will have better color, cheaper, and over all better. It IS a large blackbelt..15"...takes a while to get them that large....but that takes away half the fun of growing it out yourself. I'd tell the store and the owner to go screw themselves...get a better fish, come back a few months later and rub your better fish in their face! 
I agree; it wouldn't be worth it for me. If you have the extra cash though, it's what you really want, and you are going to look back and be disappointed if you don't get it, I say go for it. I think there are better fish out there that you could spend $500 on though.
