Its not essential but it somewhat helps an arowana feel more comfortable in the water since blackwater replicates the water quality (bit on the acidic side) found in the rivers where amazons are native to ,be it in the amazon or the rivers of southeast asia.

Yup, there is many fish wich feels more comfortable in blackwater. Blackwater is in the nature really clean because of the acidic water.

the only think I really don't like is when people come over and say "EWWWW!!, why don't you clean your tank......" It turns the water a tinge of yellow....=)

yeah blackwater is sweet and it adds a nice color to the tank...i use it with all my s.a cichlids........and they go crazy...
