I have a red tailed catfish, alas the name should be changed to brown tailed catfish. I got it and was excited for a bright red tail but its a dull brownish tan. Is it just the way it is or can I boost the color? thanks for the help.

That would be correct. A small catfish wouldn't do very well with a bright red tail to alert predators. A larger one could care less though. Once it is around a foot the red should start showing up better.
I hate also read somewhere that shrimp with the shell still on also helps with the color. Although you may still need to wait until the fish matures

I tend to agree with the maturity argument, albeit recently some one said their sister had a 2" RTC with a bright red tail. Cannot remember who - I hope they will chime in.

that's a pretty good looking little rtc. the color will become more vivid as it grows, just as the others have said.
I got my rtc at about 1.5 inches. It's pushing 6-7 inches now and the tail is starting to turn red. Shrimp def help the enhancement of the red!

have always wanted a red tail cat! such a shame they don`t come in a smaller package! nice looking little one by the way! and as others have said....the colour will come with size.
I feed it frozen brine shrimp as part of their diet. Will that help?
