if i was trying to clean up a piece of driftwood would it be ok to pour a bleach solution over it?

ttt

if you are planning to put it back into a tank then I would say NO, even with constant soaking afterwards i would be highly worried about bleach leaching into the water..... better just using hot water and a clean scrubbing brush

getting rid of the sodium hypochlorite (bleach) residue is as easy as soaking the piece in a tub with water and plenty of dechlorinator. we usually soak a large piece in 1 to 4 bleach/water for a day or so in a clean trash barrel or similar, then repeated soakings in plain water for a week or two. if there is any bleach smell, then we soak in water with dechlorinator. boiling is great, but not always practical for large pieces. we have also pressure washed loose surface debris on large driftwood before soaking and that works great. smaller pieces could be scrubbed by hand before soaking. hope this helps.

ok great then im going to soak it in either a bathtub or a trashcan with bleach and then just soak for a week in dechlored water
thanx for the help i let you know how it goes

heck, you can even soak in it a bleach then let it sundry for a few days and that's just as good as a dechlorinator as well. They are 2 very solid and proven ways of cleaning wood and applying it to the aquarium. I've done the bleach and dry method for years (I live on the gulf coast and have found some gorgeous pieces of wood after hurricanes)

awesome i might do both ;)

agree with aquadi. letting it air dry is also very effective. either way will work.

This must be the unofficial Florida MFKers thread.

Howdy fellow Floridians.

Faraway, have you ever considered hosting a Gulf Coast MFK meet up? There are quite a few members on the Gulf Coast.
