Bleaching my pythons, tank, filter

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
in just bleached my 50ft python hose last month i pour it into the hose about 2 cups i locked the 1 end and just ran hot water while hooked to the sink let it sit in the hose for about 15 min and let it run into my yard i let the hot water run for about ten min & everything was fine

OK, all filter media is boiled, the FX5 is running a bleach solution through itself right now (in the sink, just in case I screw something up), and the python and bucket are getting set up for the next step.

I wonder if this'll kill off all the old mildew inside the python tubing. That'd be neat.

The bleach I'm using is outdoor bleach and says nothing about chlorine, but I believe it's the same stuff. It says it rapidly breaks down to saltwater.

I'll probably still over-rinse everything due to my paranoia, but overall this still won't end up being all that much effort.

How did you circulate the bleach through to be sure it covered the whole length?

Here's just a something I found out when you want to clean up your tank or some equpiment after having a virus or parasite in it. You can take a betadine solution and saturate a rag and go over your tank or etc with it. It will kill any virus or bacteria in the tank. Then just a quick washout and you are good. It's not as risky as using bleach in your tank, which I can tell makes you nervous.

Interesting. Makes sense. I wonder if there are resistant parasites though.

Potassium Permanganate seems like another less risky solution too, since you can just neutralize it with H2O2.

Anyway, I'm long past that. The QuietOne bleach pump is working like a charm, and the FX5 is sparkly and new and fresh.

I'm actually never going to hook the FX5 back up to this tank. If I'm starting fresh with new filter media anyway, I'm just going to use an Eheim that has lower flow. The wild discus prefer a lighter flow return. So I'll give this one a few days to air out and then throw it on the tank downstairs that's for sale... though now I'm leaning back toward keeping it...

I've been running the pump through the 50 foot python with tons and tons of mildew in it and it's slowwwwly disappearing over the past hour. I am considering dumping in more bleach. After this there's 25 feet left to go and everything will be nice and clean.

If it's not too pricey I might go get a 1" ID tube that I can use to drain one of my tanks from now on and just use the pythons to fill it. Then I'll be able to dedicate each of these pythons to a specific tank, thereby eliminating the risk of possible cross contamination between tanks. I'm getting paranoid now that these discus have had this issue.

From everything i have read contact time is important with bleach. No need to circulate the water, it'll do it's job better without. So, just fill it up with bleach..

When I do my camper lines, it's always important to let the bleach sit and "work".

Makes sense. Next time I do it I'll just pump it through and then shut off the pump.

There will be a next time because I already un-sterilized it. Didn't plan ahead... the 10m rinse + dechlor strategy is being put to the test in the most expensive possible way (discus tank).
