bleaching on new acro coral.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
1 of the new corals is doing great. healthy green poly's color is coming around.

the other is holding on. not much poly extension, some color. no bleaching or rtn yet.

i posted on the other tread that i fragged my birdsnest. it wasnt easy, very bittle. i wasted some good small pieces but for the most part saved most. got 7 decent sized frags.

This often happens when you frag birds...

Keep us in the loop with these new corals. Bleaching when new isnt rare for a lot of people, and many bring their corals back.

im not concerned with bleaching. its the rtn thats the real killer.

im still wondering if my 2 leather corals are cause some problems. carbon can take care of the toxins they emit though. i have a toad stool and a finger leather in there.

if i had another tank id move them.

im going to add a uv sterilizor and see if it helps. i will run it opposite of the lights even though aqua uv recommends 24/7 and to turn off for a few hours when feeding plankton.

he is some info i ran across about alk and sps corals.

when i got my first acros my alk was close to th 13-14 range which was way to high.

now i lowered it to around 10.8. new corals seem to be doing better, why, apparently "most" expert sps keepers never let their alk get higher then 9 dkh. most say it greatly reduces rtn if alk is 9 and lower and improves color.

does anyone here dose vodka?

I do not dose vodka, but I am looking into solid carbon dosing for my tank once it gets fully stocked.

I do 20g a week h2o changes, but fully stocked, I dont know if my tank will still have good h2o parameters, so that is why I am looking into it.

If my tank gets fully stocked and Im not having any issues...then I wont solid carbon dose.

dkh is 10.5 and dropping. i will only let it drop about .5 per day. then i will need to balance cal/alk/mag when done and dial in the reactor to hold 9 dkh.

whats the difference in solid carbon and granulated carbon?

what i think im going to do is add my carbon to my gfo reactor . i read its better that way.

what is your dkh on your tank flesh?

Solid carbon is like the pellets...just anything that isnt vodka or another liquid mixture. Solid carbon for carbon dosing is actually an organic plastic that dissolves in your tank, getting the carbon that bacteria need to process nitrate and some phosphates into something else, or just into the bodies of the bacteria which are then skimmed out of your system. Carbon like...filter carbon...isnt going to do the same thing that vodka dosing will. You will need to buy "bio-pellets". That is just the fancy term for solid carbon dosing pellets. DKH on my 75g reef was ridiculously low. To the point where I would be embarassed to talk about it on here in a public place. That being said, that was on a crappy test kit, and after I got a salifert, for pH (Which was something else I was "battling" at the time.) I saw that there was nothing wrong with my pH, and just assumed the same about the DKH. I just let it slide from there...and my tank never really suffered. Frequent h2o changes probably help. I havent tested for dkh on this new large reef tank, but when I do I will post back.

I personally don't think I have a need to dose vodka or use solid carbon?

I forgot how much I love a uv on a closed system. Water clarity has improved 500% in just a few days. Now let's see if it helps with the green dust algea
