Bleeding Fish!!!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
First of all, post your test kit. What brand did you use? Is it expired or defective? If you are using test strips, then again strips are grossly inaccurate as has often been repeated around here. Please get an API liquid test kit if you haven't and retest.

How often do you feed? What do you feed your fish? What is your tank maintenance regimen? pH is not an issue if you have readings of ammonia other than zero. Why? The ammonia is converted to ammonium which is less toxic to fish but the toxicity is reactivated once the water becomes alkaline (above 7.0) assuming your test kit is accurate.

Do your fish have red streaks or blood vessels showing on their body prominently? Please answer all these queries to get a proper diagnosis.

Update Fish are back to normal.... I believe it was the rescue pacus that were hitting them around. Because I found some bite marks on my fish recently. I took them out. And I no longer see any shyness or fighting. So problems <Pacu>

The only time I have ever seen this in fish was my daughters grade 1 teacher's classroom gold fish. She had these huge fish in a 20g (normally in a pond all summer) all she did was top up the water all throught the school term, which was fine when they were small. When the bleeding through the scales started I came in and tested her water and the nitrates were off the scale. My API test shows up to 100! I explained how the nitrate build up works and after daily large water changes and melafix and two weeks of healing they recovered,.........and I taught a teacher something!
