I bought a baby bleekeri about a month ago and have a few questions about him. First hes yellow. granted he is a baby but are these guys different colors for sex or is this something that is only because he is a baby? I love the black fish with the pretty spots i always see at the pet stores and thats what I thought i was buying. someone plese tell me he is gonna eventully turn black. also are these fish pretty skittish? Since he went in the tank he has hid behind the overflow. I only see him for an instant when he rushes out to eat then runs back. he is even having a hard time fitting back there anymore. all my other fish even the aro (a pretty timid spec) will almost let me pet them, he is the only hider. Any suggestions?

They're all mostly brown as juvies. It'll darken up as it matures. It'll also get over it's shyness, if left alone, as it grows. Fry have more of a survival instinct/fear than adults since fry can be prey for more predators than adults.

Here's one of my large spots at a little over 3 inches. Still has alot of brown in him:

Just as said they are more of a brown when young and when they grow they turn black. when they are adults if they do turn that brown colors it is usually becuase its stressed. Skiddish is something he/she should get over, just depends. Mine was pretty skiddish at 5inch but she was also beat up alot. Shes 7 inches now and is just now starting to come out more other then just trying to get food. They are pretty cool fish. Here is a pic of mine (they were both stressed when the pic was taken and they are also smaller -sadly I havent taken any recent ones):

Yours sounds just like mine when I first bought him. They really come out of their shell as they get older.

Here's what he looked like when I first got him...

And about 8 months later...

I suggest feeding them a wide variety of foods early too get the best colors and also because they can be stubborn later on if you don't give them what their used too. I fed mine Tetra CichlidSticks and Hikari Gold Pellets daily with freeze dried brine shrimp and shelled peas once a week and nightcrawlers once a month. A few homemade feeders and live house bugs every now and then too.
