ive seen blind bichirs on here and they are really dark almost black, someone had said its because they cant see they think they are in a cave so they try to match their enviroment ....made sense to me sept for my bichirs when i have the lights off for any long period of time because i work a swing shift at a lumber mill i get home around 4 oclock in the morning i'll come home and turn the light on my tank on and after being in the dark for 12 hours + my bichirs are all washed out pale ,but after the lights are on for awhile they darken right up ....i have black substrate which im told gets them dark.....ive left the lights on when im gone and they dont loose there color....its just that cuz a bichir cant see he turns dark ,doesnt add up when they turn light when the lights are out and they cant see..................anybody got a thought.

get some dark colored substrare, and you will never see them pale as long as water quality is good, with light or without.

this is the media lounge, we demand some photos

ive got black substrate sorry bout putting it in the media lounge wasnt paying attention.

hmmm... this should not be the case, pale bichirs are usually stressed or un-acclimatized. my bichirs are the same color with or without light, before and after opening the lights.

My bichirs don't get pale as well if I turn the lights off for the night. I work night shift and my tank is dark from 7pm-6am. When I turn the lights on they are still high contrast. My bichirs only become pale when my temp drops to 77F or lower.

Makes me think that at night his temp might be getting un-comfortably cold?

I have always found the "blind" bichir discussion interesting relating them to cave fish. Are not true "blind" cave fish white not dark?
