Bloat in CA/SA species

You can get light diffuser in the same place you get eggcrate (which is just light diffuser as well) at lowes/home depot and its solid and cloudy looking so you cant see through it.

If you know the measurements, you can have them cut it for you there.

I quarantined a standard 75g into 6 sections for 8 months growing beani out separately before and it worked great. It gives you decent control over each ones diet as well.
 
Just wanted to say that you couldn't have been more right.

The bloated istlanum died next day in the quarantine tank after separating it, I was only able to add one tablet of clout and found it dead the next morning before doing the 25% water change to add a second dose.
I decided to re-scape their tank and add a bunch of extra caves, driftwood and hiding spots but it didn't work. Since then the biggest of the bunch has killed 5 of its siblings (last two I found today) and I only got 2 left: Him and another mangled one that is hiding under a piece of driftwood.

To make matters worse, the one that killed the rest happens to be deformed. His dorsal fin is not properly developed and the first few rays look like stumps, it's not a wound but some kind of stunted growth that he had when I got it. I won't keep that as a show fish so he will go in the pond where he'll have a chance to survive or not.

Next time I try this species I will definitely divide the tank into several small parts. They are vicious (This is the same tank were I raised 7 festae from fry with no issues at all).
 
I had no idea istlanum could be so aggressive. Apparently I haven't read up on them enough. Thanks for coming back and posting the update. Sorry about your situation.
 
I noticed that there's been some recent discussion about "bloat", and apparently some people still don't understand this ailment, or what triggers it. Hopefully for those members this info will help.

Not many people realize that Clout is a combination of Metronidazole and Malachite Green, both for treatment of protozoa parasites. I figure it out by doing research on the medication formula. Clout purposely don't list the common names of the medication.
 
Good idea on the bump, and I still enjoy reading this.
Especially the part that even the constant struggle for hierarchy in a tank (dominant fish) can cause the fish to stress to the point of lowering its immune system to bloat; even when its not being bullied by other fish.
This is why I raise my dominant male Beani by himself; even though I know that no other fish would touch him, the constant struggle/stress of chasing other fish out of its territory is just unnecessary stress to add to a sensitive fish.

+1, having a wet pet is definitely the way to go IMO... seeing some of the overstocked tanks on here and especially YouTube is ridiculous. Unless you have an absolute monster sized tank or pond where there can be very clear boundaries/territories for each fish, I can't imagine a fish will ever thrive or be happy in conditions where it's unable to relax and/or rest from constantly chasing or being chased everywhere it goes.
