You are right. I don't think it is full blown bloat, but rather overfeeding. And you are right, if the over feeding continues and this fish stays fat then it will become a serious problem. My suggestion would be to change feeding schedules. Feed less, feed different foods, have a day of fasting. Maybe even isolate the fish if possible to help it digest its food. Epsom salt baths would be good too.

Given how varied her diet is, what else should I be feeding?

(I've tried just feeding the pictus late at night, but Fluffy will come out of her "sleeping spot", and snatch it right out from under the pictus.)

What would be a way to treat that? Just curious as I have not had the problem yet. But would be nice to know.

I honestly don't know.. I know that I did my own idea of things to see if it helped, and it did..

What I did was raise the temp to 80 and salted it to .3%

Then, I did a water change, and dropped the water to 75. Not adding salt.

I did this back and forth for a series of a week, and it seemed to have done the trick.

Personally, I don't think it's over feeding. twice a day is not over feeding.

My Jack Dempseys were pigs. They ate anything and everything.

I think your diet is varied, just stick to sinking foods do she doesn't ingest any air.

Any foods high in fiber. Also foods like krill that have shell on it provide roughage, which aids in digestion. But the main thing is try feeding less, maybe have a fasting day including into the feeding schedule. Try to figure out ways to get food to your other fish without the JD stealing it. I would wait until the lights have been off for awhile and then feed right before you actually get into bed. In complete darkness the pictus would have a better chance.

He could even use a divider to keep the Jd away.

Ok, thanks.. I don't think she's going to starve to death anytime soon, so I won't feed tomorrow and will see what happens. If she looks better, I'll probably feed again on Wed night.. If she looks worse, I'll see if I can catch her without tearing the tank down (there's a LOT of hiding space). If not, I'll try the salt thing...

(Glad to finally know she's a she... NOW..anyone wanna sex my Firemouth?)

Another thing, ditch the carbon. After 2 days it's shot, and it only aids in removing meds and odors.

You would be better off slapping a sponge on each side of the filter.

I just checked all of her food... 2%, 2.5%, 3%, 3%, and 4% fiber.

I suppose I can cut down to feeding every other day...
