Blood Parrot Care Help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Earthworms might be okay, just have to make sure they are purged out from anything inside of them first. I think to do that, you would have to starve them a little in a wet container, and let them poop out any dirt and grit first, and then feed them.

As for feeding feeder minnow fish and etc, personally, I wouldn't recommend it.. it's risky, especially if you just got them from a LFS, because the fish could be hosting parasites and bacteria and you don't want that in your parrots or other fish. If you want to feed feeder fish, then I'd say you should breed them yourself and make absolute sure they are super healthy, dewormed, disease-free from the inside and out, before feeding them to fish.

Have a good one, bloodylucky.

Thanks mate! Helps a lot. After I starve the worms out is it pretty certain that they'll be okay or should I feed the worms something cleaner or disease free while I'm making them digest

Yeah, they'll be okay after starving them.

Alright thanks guys and also regarding the tank cycle I think I'll just return the rosy reds afterward. Does that sound ok? I know my petco back in NYC took the feeder minnows back but I'm not sure about this one since we moved. Also in 2 years I'm going to college. Hopefully taking my blood parrot won't be too much of a hassle. I've seen it been done before.

Welcome.. I think you have a few weeks, or months left before the Petco receipt expires, so yeah, better get cycled soon so you can get a refund or an exchange for different fish. Have fun in college.

Thanks. Luckily my dad is good at taking care of fish as he kept discus healthy in a 72 gallon for a good decade when I was younger. He said he is happy to care for it when I go to college. It's too bad blood parrots seem like really social fish. Im gonna miss him when I leave :(

That's great that your dad is willing to do that for you. Very awesome of him. And yeah, sometimes we simply just have no choice but to sacrifice, and put away some of the less important luxurious things in life on hold. Happens.. Your dad is a discus expert, he will take really good care of the those hardy BRP's no problem so ya don't need to worry. :)
