Blood Parrot Layed Eggs - Need Advice!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What else is in there? How big is the tank. If he is fertilizing and they hatch, the other fish are in a bad spot. Convicts are crazy mean when caring for eggs and fry...

He definitely did not follow her and fertilize. Most of the eggs are white now. Isn't she suppose to be eating the unfertilized ones? Maybe she can't because of her mouth. I guess they will just have to learn with experience.

I know they are aggressive during this time, but I doubt they would kill any of the other fish. They just chase them if they get too close to the eggs. There is 6 Red Eye Tetras, 5 Clown Loaches, and my 2" Juvenile Flowerhorn. The tank is a 40 breeder. This is not their permanent tank.

I'd watch particularly close for the juvie FH's. In my experience, cichlids go for their own first, and viciously. The tetras will likely be ignored / get out of the way. The loaches may take a beating - they spend a lot of time wandering without much regard to what's going on above.

Best bet would be letting the convict / parrot go solo, but worst case, expect to move the loaches first.

As far as the eggs go, I'd let the pair have at it 3-4x before moving eggs. With a convict in the mix, expect parenting to be impressive after the first or second failure. If you do move them, move them with tank water, and do water changes with the parent's tank water until the wrigglers decide to start eating.

Thanks for the advice.

I actually no longer have the Convict or the Tetras.
The Con was not fertilizing the eggs at all, so my Blood Parrot just kept eating them
after she'd finish laying them. I am hoping she will now mate with a 4" male Firemouth.
But so far, no interest in eachother.

Blood Parrot x Pink Convict is pretty common anyway.
Blood Parrot x Firemouth, I have actually never seen or heard of one?
Not sure what the fry would look like if they end up pairing up, but they'd definitely be quite interesting.
