Blood parrot?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
He said he knows it is a female because it laid eggs. I do not believe it ever had a tattoo. Right now I have a shipment of 40 medium blood parrots and 30 small blood parrots in stock. Many have black marks on their body, none in the same place. Some outgrow the black as it fades away. Others retain the black as an undertone and show it much in the same way other cichlids will show stress bars. Either way it is nothing to be concerned about. I would still make sure the water is clean and healthy, regardless of what the fish may look like.
From the pic I could not see the mouth. Is it shaped like other parrots mouths or can it close normally? From the pic, witht he lack of a hump and a possible closing mouth, it looks like you may have a KKP rather than a BP. I would need a pic face on to tell for sure.

uhm..how did you know she was a female when you bought her from the store?
the op has already said that she has layed eggs ! think that means female to me :)

all BPs are different shapes etc etc i used to keep a few but only have one now i had all different shapes, some with realy protruding heads and some without ! the colour patches are normally due to stress if they are fading and then coming back.
my large male that i kept is always losing his colour and gaining 2 dark patches whenever i do a water change but he colours up by the same eve.

and as another poster said these guys grow really slow once they hit th 5-6" mark, mines nearly 9-10" and hes nearly 4 years old !

She is very pretty. She does have a neat shape to her face, but the shape of parrots vary considerably. I have 9 parrots, and they all look completely different from one another. I have one with a big hump on his head, and I have one that looks like yours. I think I also have one of the only white parrots on this site.

The spots on her side are from being tattooed....She had something written on her side long ago, and was probably returned when the writing wore off...Look up "I love you parrots" on an image search on google, and you will see what I mean. Good luck with her, she is pretty.

actually those black dots all parrots get when stressed or time for a water change even before spawning. so its not that it had a tattoo my parrot gets the black dots too then just wear off

I'm going to have to agree with Spizz on this one, simply because the dots look like the same colors and location as the tattoos on some parrots I've seen.

I just think it's too much of a coincidence for your parrot to appear to have a line of faint black dots with what looks like a faded pinkish red line underneath it, similar to the fish above. Young fish are tattooed and they can fade quickly, I would definitely not be at all surprised if yours was tattooed at one point.

they do seem to be in the same line as that tattoo but I think it is a coincidence.. only because he says they come and go.. if they completley dissapear then they would not be an old tattoo...
I have a blood parrot right now has a black mark on his tail.. the temps in my tank have raised ( hot weather) and causing him to be very territorical.. paired off with a female and moving rocks ... he thinks he is giong to have some babies LOL. Anyway he alwasy gets a black mark when he gets very territorial and is in breeding mode. It will go away once the female has her eggs. I do water changes every two days when it is hot to help get the temps down.. I def have very good water.
