They do get big. But they are so cool! :)

But there are certain types that can live in a 180....

Not sure how quickly they grow?

What about rainbow cichlids or EBJDs?
I do like the EBJDs. Are they aggressive at all like regular ones? I do like those and the heterospilius :)

kewpiefishypewpie kewpiefishypewpie also mentioned cryptoheros! I like the nanolutes because of the bright yellow. Do the cutteri all look blue and yellow like this picture?

I wouldn't buy anything for your 55 that will outgrow it with your future looking so undefined at the moment. But there are lots of great, smaller cichlids that will be fine in a 55 for forever. Cryptoheros, amatitlania, some thorichthys, laetacara, bujurquina. I'm sure I'm missing others.

Stanzzzz7 Stanzzzz7 and cichlidfish cichlidfish are great resources for all the awesome, small, peaceful CA's out there

yeah I agree. Cause I know I will get a big tank in the future, but right now just don't know when that will be. So I definitely agree for keeping things in the 55 for now. Think I will go ahead and do the cryptoheros. Do you think cutteri and nanolutes will be okay?

You should post in the CA/SA forum - might get some really nice suggestions there. Just be prepared - people can be a little more abrupt.... but just as knowledgeable!

From my understanding a lot of fish can out compete polys for food.
You need something that grows big enough to avoid predation from your poly but won't grow too big to quickly and has a mouth too small for the poly food.
All this taken into account a surface dwelling species would also be preferable.
Cichlids I would recommend are angel fish or festivums. Other fish that could work are pink kissing guarami or snakeskin guarami.
