Let me put it another way, I prefer them to eat whatever they want and enjoy life rather than force them on something just to make them look pretty for my satisfaction. Won't do anything if it's really UNHEALTHY, but so long as it's healthy enough for it to still grow and stuff, then I'd prefer that.
Thats right buddy...because like us out here in world, we never know when we're gonna die. Have fun with the hobby, be relaxed...there is no right or wrong way. What I enjoyed most about the experience of fishkeeping is learning on my own and experimenting. I've read a few books and magazines and we learn a lot of technical info from MFK but I dont want to be ANAL about it. Im not saying start feeding them potato chips though, but have fun.

A distinction should be made between hobbies involving live animals, and those that don't.
I can't imagine any decent person would deny the notion that there are certain responsibilities that come with live animals. Those are lives, no matter how insignificant they may seem.
The OP asked a valid and important question. Some responses offering insights might be a bit hash but nothing over the line. Those who encourage others to do whatever they "like", particularly those who know full well what should be done, should find another hobby. Pottery, among many others, sounds like a good option.
It would be an unhealthy diet, lacking in many essential nutrients for proper overall health.
