OK, my erythrinus wolf is named bloody face for a reason, he messes his face up pretty good once in a while jumping against the lid. Anyone who's owned an ery has probably experienced the same thing, this time though he has almost sliced a good part of his lupper lip off and its hanging by a flap, exposing flesh and teeth.. He's never gotten himself like this, so I figured I'd get some opinion on treatment.

Usually when he does this, I go with just some salt, melafix and pimafix. He seems to have done well with that but this seems more serious. How should I tackle this?

I'm going to say, keep with the same treatments, and make sure the water is VERY VERY clean... since i'm going to guess, as long as the wound doesn't get infected, the fish should heal up fine...

Thanks for the input homer i figured id throw it up here for opinions because its such a deep wound, once that flap falls off its going to look like when people cut lips on their pirahna.. i can already see those top teeth a lot more haha its freaking me right out

No worries, and yeah, sounds nasty, but another member here had a pacu that ripped off its whole lower lip as well and was fine after it heeled up...

Cant remember her username right now, but there are definitely photos around...

Oof that's brutal, my Buddy's pacu went batcrap crazy one time and took the lips off the other members of the tank, including a few Oscars and plecos.. they healed up just fine I just want to avoid secondary infection ya know

Theres a pic of ol bloody face, the flap fell off so you can see the extent of the damage, now you can see his teeth whenever haha. When i was told red wolves are jumpy i was expecting it to be bad, but not this bad haha

Doesnt look too bad compared to the pacu i mentioned before, so im pretty sure your red wolf should be fine...

In fact i was almost expecting it to be a lot worst or maybe its the pic? But either way im glad to see i was wrong and damage doesnt seem too bad...

Its not that its huge its really deep, if i got a pic at the right angle you could see his upper lip is a couple cms back from the lower lip. its healing up pretty quickly though it happened 2 weeks ago at this point, it was much worse but i couldnt get a pic before because the flap of skin and flesh was hiding it, it is a bit wider then its showing in the pic because theres still a bit of a flap goin on haha

I think he'll be OK, just keep the water super clean and keep him stress free. Maybe keep the lights off if you think he'd be less apt to hurt himself until he's healed up.

I only use ambient lighting for now until I can get a good set of dimmers so that keeps the fish pretty chill, the most stressful thing he goes through is getting into a tug o war with the rope fish over a full sized worm and me watching TV so he should be good. I was just wondering if I should go with a more intense healing regimen then my usual mela, Pima, and salt
