Blue acara tankmates in 90 gallon tank & breeding advice wanted!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Too true. All the cichlids have individual personalities that can make or break a tank if you just go by what the stereotype of that fish is. So I am taking as much caution as I can with getting the fish and setting them up. The firemouth would be the bully I would worry about. It (stereotypically) is the most aggressive species currently listed in the tank.

I just got the blue acara yesterday and he/she has taken to the tank very well. Doesn't display the same shyness I am used to seeing in newly introduced fish, so we will see if that means it is a bully or just not scared. :) I got it because it was small and in the same tank with a bunch of other much larger blue acara. It was being chased by several of the others, so I decided I would add a small cichlid to my 20 gallon until my 90 is done cycling. It has barely paid the 6 small angelicus loaches any attention at all and even when it did, it was a curiosity, not aggression. I did have 2 rummy nose and 4 neons in the tank though and I lost a rummy nose last night, so I think the acara killed it and the loaches ate it. I am taking the tetras back to my LFS today to give them back and maybe get one of the tiny 1.5" firemouths I saw there.

Yea meh fire mouths aren't aggressive IMO. They just flare at everything and wont get as big as the blue acara. My blue ate the head of one of my loaches and never touched the other one. But he jumped out and died he was about 7" and bulky! Ps wheres the pics!!!

I am at work right now, but I will take pics of the fish later on.

The tank only has a few decorations in it so that it doesn't look weirdly empty. At least to me anyways. LOL

The loaches and blue acara are about the same size. All but 2 of the loaches are just a tad smaller. The other 2 are pretty much the same size as the acara. The acara is being shy for the camera, but the loaches love to photo bomb my pics. LOL
