My blue acara babies have been free swimming for 8 days now, i feed them frozen baby brine shrimp which they eat greedily. How long before they can take other foods and what would you recommend to feed them?

Keep them on brine for a while... At least a month or two. Make sure to do LOTS of water changes if you want them to grow.

Personally, I would then start them out on a high quality pellet that is no bigger than .5mm and is a bit higher in protein and fat (since they're growing).

NLS makes a Grow formula that's great, and other food companies should make a similar product. You could also feed crushed flake.

Wrong.

Blue acara have orange trim on their dorsal fin.

Perhaps you're thinking of a "silver saum"?

My BA's had red/orange trim.
I use NLS grow, the size is prefect too.
I find if the pellets are too big the parents will break it up for the fry.

I agree. The majority of the cichlids that I have kept have done a great job feeding their fry with very little help from me. But NLS and Hikari First Bites are good foods for growing fry. Nice looking Acaras BTW.
