hey guys, a guy from my LFS called me today saying he got some blue channel catfish for really cheap. I can't seem to find a definitive size for these things online, would anybody know how big they get?

The record catches of blue channels date long ago, like a century ago or two. They were found to max out at about 165 cm TL (~5' 6"). Modern times catches do not exceed 4' usually. This is all speaking about the wild. IDK what the statistics is like in captivity. I'd expect 4' though too. People that kept both channels and blue channels report the latter grow significantly faster.

Ictalurus Furcatus is the name for the "true" blue catfish. They grow much larger than channels and are not the same species. What op is looking at is the common Ictalurus punctatus.. The "blue" part is just a marketing scheme, there is nothing special about them.

I agree that the fish you found is punctatus, not furcatus. Either way, jprp has it right: plan for it like its a cool water red tail cat.
