Convict cichlid female, note the blue trim around the gill and anal fin he was talking about.

HRP Female

His fish...looking at the small photo looks just like a normal convict IMO.

I know what he's talking about by the blue trim around the gill plate, but that's not normal for a true common convict imo. you'll see that kind of blue on a sajica or HRP but not on cons unless they are the rarer blue form of convict which is not all that commonly available. I don't think the female con in that pic is a pure nigrofasciatus either. with as much as convicts have been hybridized with other cichlids in the past 5-10 years it's probably actually easier to find a con hybrid than a pure C. nigrofasciatus. just my opinion on the matter though :)

its totally the norm for both the male and female to color up with some intense blues. definitely moreso the female. nice fish.

If they don't have the broken stripes then they are not HRP. If they have the T-Bar on them then they would be part sajica, otherwise if not then no. Can you post of pic of your convicts?

a sajica x convict would not have to have the tbar. when hybrids occur, some of the fry look mostly like one parent, some look mostly like the other parent while the remainder will show some traits of both parents. so, if a con and sajica were to hybridize, not all of the fry would show the tbar, but may show other triats of the sajica parent such as the blue area under the chin and around the dorsal area. imo, this is not normal of a pure convict unless it is one of the rarer blue morph which so far as I know primarily occur only in the Rio Mongo and have only recently become available though only through a couple of sources. :)

oh, I have several pictures of female HRP's that I've had whose vertical bars are all solid all the way back to the tail. all pictures of the males I have show the last few bars only going halfway down the body while becoming very faint under the midlateral line. again though, I have several female pics where those back few bars are solid all the way down. :)

Thats funny because I was reading the article in the latests Tropical Fish Hobbyist and Rusty Wessel, and he said that one of the differences is the broke bands on the HRP that the true convict does not have. You might not of had a true HRP, it might of been bred either by a hybrid or a hybrid.

And I have seen a lot of sajica x con hybrids and I have noticed a lot of the time the fry usually have a bolder middle stripe.

alright i give up.everyone is telling me i have something different.if any of my friends ask, i'm saying its a special Petco "mystery fish"LOL

the HRP's I got were from the president of the ACA Phil Benes out of Cincinnati and I am almost positive all HRP's that are in the Cincinnati club came through Rusty Wessel. I know Rusty well and have gotten many fish from him. the pics I have of females with solid bars were in breeding color so the bars would of course be much darker during these times. I'll post a pic to show what I'm talking about. again though, I don't have any pics of males with solid bars all the way back, only the female and it was while she was guarding fry. actually, I'll have to post the pics later because I'm not on my computer right now but when I get on mine I'll upload a couple of the pics I'm referring to. :)
