My best guess is a female Cherax Quad: smaller claws and ridged head. Lovely cray too. Such a pretty colour!

Thanks, and yes you are right. She was identified in another thread as a female Cherax Quadricarinatus as well. It's pretty cool, every time she sheds her colors become more vibrant.

Well this is wonderful. I just yesterday picked up my very first cray, and I think mine is the same, a female C. Quad. The lfs could only ID her as a blue cray/lobster. Here in central IL it is hard to come by folks with knowledge of exotic species. I got her out to the car, looked underneath her, in her double-bagged state, and thought "looks like a girl to me!" I see no "hourglass" pattern on her "neck" area, ala an alleni or clarkii, and no diamond shapes on her back ala an o. immunis. I am very new to crays, and wish to learn all I can about this fascinating creature!

My large Cray is a female also.. I'm thinking C. Quad. too, due to the similarities I can see between your photos and my cray.. I'm wanting to breed mine, and I've found that getting anyone in my LFS to correctly identify species is difficult enough.. but sexing them appears to be utterly impossible for the LFS staff. The whole situation is hampered somewhat by 'experts' coming in and telling everyone who seels the fish that the females are borwn, and the males are blue... REALLY not helpful.
I'm getting more and more info as time goes on.. but what I don't have yet is a definitive list of cray-friendly monster fish.. but I hope to get something together as time goes on...
I've got three much smaller crays in the tank with her as well, with LOTS of hiding places to get away from her.. we shall see what occurs...

Males have longer claws and arms while female claws tend to be shorter. Males appear to have longer and more slender tails while female tails look wider. Females also have the more noticeable swimmerettes under their tails so they can hold onto their eggs.
