The shrimp is the raw frozen type at the store. Not the cheapest...but not the most expensive. You can probably get away with not giving them this type of shrimp until they are around 4 inches. I would definitly add a quality cichlid flake and pellet, (small) to your menu. The mysis shrimp is good for their systems.

at what sizre did you notice one was male/female and how would i be able to tell?
To be honest with you, and I am in no way an expert, (far from) I did not know until the first spawn. Here's what I do know. When I got these three fish 18 months ago, the female was slightly larger and was the major aggressor. Once all the fish were 4-5 inches, I noticed two things. The males became the aggressors with the female and themselves. Secoond, the males continued to grow at a faster rate and started to develope the humps. Females also develope the humps but not as pronounced and the females are usually smaller. I guess I could have vented the fish but I never got around to it.

ill just have to wait and see...i wouldnt mind mine breeding but i only have 2 so maybe once they get bigger and i can somewhat tell i can trade at my LFS for an male/female....thanks again good luck and keep us posted on survival rate and if your going to sell
