Blue Dolphin

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for the info guys. So much for small and peaceful. I guess I'll scratch that one off my community tank list.

A LFS in MD had/has some - but most have died, if not all. Probably not enough aeration. Crazy color to them too - iridescent blue! Anyone got a video of them feeding? How big do they get?

If anyone has any cool photos of Cetopsis, feel free to send them to me at santoury@aol.com I've been really interested in their feeding behavior in the wild - I wonder if they have a "target prey species" or if they are generally "eat whatever comes along" Thanks

you're thinking of the candiru. it's another catfish and i've seen them before but i dont think that they look like that. kinda brownish and scraggley looking

These are also sold as "Blue Sharks".

LFS/pet store called Feeders Supply in Louisville, KY has three of them. I was just there tonight.... Got great tank prices too.

Scraggly looking? I'm not sure I would call them that..They are very sleek and graceful predators..They hunt with surgical precision.

On the name Candiru as it relates to Cetopsis:

Cetopsis are Candiru...More correctly Candiru acu.

Candiru is a catch all name for a number of fish in the Portuguese speaking parts of South America, that is unless your talking about Cetopsis candiru in which it is the species name.

The "Vampire" candiru are Vandelliinae Trichomycterid catfish, In particular Vandellia, paravandellia, and paracanthopoma .

I wonder if they have a "target prey species" or if they are generally "eat whatever comes along"

The Cetopsis coecutiens C. candiru complex of these fish tend to be the most predatory and the most active in attacking large prey fish as a "pack". These fish are very opportunistic and will feed on about anything...Many of the other species of cetopsids are pretty much benthic feeders that feed on mostly insect larvae, mollusks or carrion.
