Guys, just wanted to know more about this beautiful pleco............has anyone out there succeeded in breeding this?

I did a google search and some guy on myspace mentioned that a fellow in Europe has gotten them to breed. Anyone know about this or know of others who are trying to breed this pleco before it becomes extinct????

i don't see how it would be different from any regular pleco breeding. the only difficulty I foresee is getting the cash for more than 1 LOL

Yeah but have you heard of anyone doing this?

ALSO, can you guys help me straighten something out:

P. cochliodon has blue eyes

P. suttonorum also has blue eyes.

From what I have read the blue eye plecos most people have read about/seen may be p. cochliodon because p. suttonorum is lighter in color and not as dark as the ones we have seen in pics.

Any input?

Back in the day Ginny Eckstein was my mentor/adopted mom....she had two blue eyes (male and female). She kept them grid divided as they are quite intolerant of one another. One day she removed the divider and all seemed to be going very well. She went out for a bit and upon her arrival home the male had basically descaled (if they had scales) the female. She was dead hours later. Before disposing of the body she sliced open the female to find her with many eggs. This is the closest thing that I have heard of.

Back in the mid 80's I managed a wholesale tropical fish operation in the Northeast. We would get blue eyes in every week. Not just blue eyes....but nice blue eyes with caudal extensions....not to the level of an adonis, but some a couple of inches long. The extensions would take on a light yellowish color to them.

Of late I've become kind of obsessed with this fish. Earlier this week I came across a post on another site of someone outside of the US who was expecting 7-8 pieces soon. They're coming from somewhere....and I don't think it's grow outs from breeding! My guess and hope is that we have not seen the last of them, although we could be waiting for quite some time.

I do not believe suttonorum has ever been in the trade (and would originate out of Venezuela, no?). The description for it, as pointed out in your link, makes no mention of blue eyes. While that does not mean that they don't, the presence of blue eyes would certainly be of interest to the describer, and probably would have been detailed.

I wouldn't be too sure about that. Recent imports of "cochliodon" look hauntingly like those described by Schultz. There have also been many speculations regarding other relatively common panaque in the trade as in fact being the original sutto.

I've seen a few photos of these new "cochliodon" and while many are quite gray they have blue eyes. And none of them quite ring true to Schultz' description of white w/black spots caudal fin or a white line across the caudal peduncle. Then again, the shot of the original type (on PC) is pretty nondescript. Of course, these few new shots usually show pretty stressed specimens, so they aren't an ideal way to draw a conclusion. Does anyone know for certain where these new cochliodon are arriving from?

The holotypical photograph by schultz is what I am comparing these fish to.They are nearly identical in regards to body shape (definitely not akin to cochliodon-they are certainly different fish), as coloration is highly variable. Also, not all fish have markedly blue eyes. Some of the animals that below water recently got in, amongst others, have rather dull optical "blueity".

the P. cochliodon is the poor man's blue eyed plec. I have 3 small ones but the eye color is more of a gold than a blue. They do have more red on their fins which I like...
Anyone know if the eyes of this species get bluer as they age/grow?

P. suttonorum (I thought) was from Columbia and due to pollution/drug cartels, collection is near impossible. The ones that do come into the trade that are about $2k a piece.
Here's an idea! How about the dope smugglers start selling these things at $500 a pop...
