My blue gene Jack Dempsey just hatched. Both parents are blue genes I was growing out. They are about 4 inches. What can I expect the fry to be?

If they really are BGJD, then a small portion of the fry will be ebjds wile the rest will be a mix of bgjd and regular jd, you won't really know. If you were looking to create ebjd this way, then as soon as you can tell, you need to split the normal from the ebjd fry as the ebjd fry will likely be outcompeted and die off if you don't.

Thank You! Is it possible to tell a regular from a blue gene? Can I leave the fry with the parents?

I'm honestly not the best person to ask as I have never tried breeding them myself, though i plan to eventually. But from everything that I've researched/seen from people who have bred them, I wouldn't leave the EBJD fry with the parents as they will likely just die off because they aren't as hardy as the normal fry.

Here is the best illustration of how to tell:

Basically if they are lighter than the other fry, likely to be ebjd. Darker, then normal jd. You're gonna have to grow them out a little in order to see.

You are the best! Thank You! I'm really excited! The parents are beautiful!

I wish I could remember who it was that was breeding jacks for ebjd. I just saw the post yesterday. (I was reading a lot of older posts yesterday on this forum and another) They showed the regulars next to the eb and it was a big difference. The eb were very light with no black from what I recall. They were smaller then the pic above.
Hopefully someone chimes in soon to give you a hand. I wish my memory was better, lol.

here's a good picture for reference from my first batch of EBJD... the lighter fry on the left is EBJD and the one on the right with dark stripes is a regular/blue gene JD (or as some would refer to as wild type)

the sooner you separate, the higher chance of survival the EBJDs have. Once the "wild type" jds begin to outgrow the EBJDs they will begin feeding on them and picking on them

You can not tell the difference between a blue gene and a regular jack. Phenotypically they are the same. The only one you can visually differentiate is the ebjd's. About a quarter of the offspring should be ebjd's and should be removed as soon as you can. The others could all stay with the parents for some time but the parents will either not spawn again til they're out of the tank or they will kill them off when they're ready to spawn.

How do you know they have the blue gene if they haven't bred before?
