Blue-Green Algae Removal?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
8 hours a day is not that long... Plus with crappy lights PLUS with plants on top I would rule lights out of this.

@robmcd... Why do you respond to threads if you are just going to treat people like that.. He came back with his opinion on why lights didn't matter... and he is correct in his case... Crappy lights on 8 hours a day is not the reason for his algae.. So as your so finely quoted above "NO ONE CARES WHAT YOUR OPINION IS!!".. You may be a mature fish keeper but not a mature person. Or you just having a really bad day

@mr bigglesworth.. Based on your other threads it seems like you are up to date on water tests and water changes. Is this correct?

To also add to this Blue green algae is not a true algae its a bacteria and is not caused by excess nutrients in the tank.. it uses photosynthesis to create its own food.

I just did a little google search and it shows that using hydrogen peroxide will get rid of it... I know mature fish that won't do anything to them... eggs on the other hand I don't know... I also read that putting some bio balls in your tank to create good bacteria helps as well to combat it.

Cyanobacteria is photosynthetic. Thus they use light to produce energy, despite how intense it is. I don't understand the rejection of lighting being the issue when its one of key requirements needed for its growth.

*After seeing goose's post. I'd be hesitant to hydrogen peroxide, since he said he had other live plants and using it in general. Theres a product at my work that we use for when our saltwater systems have a cyanobacteria outbreak. I work tomorrow, ill post the name of it when i get the chance.

@goose
Yes i just tested the water earlier today. The tank is pretty mature so no ammonia and nitrites and since my pothos plant is sucking up the majority of the nitrates i only have like 5ppm nitrates. I have a saltwater phosphate test kit but idk if it works in freshwater.

ahhh I agree with Citrinellus... Peroxide won't work with the other plants. I would wait to see what Citrinellus says tomorrow... and shutting off your lights for a few days will defiantly help.. sucks todo that but it will help.

Turning off the lights will not remove cyanobacteria. Pick up some Ultra Life blue green algae remover. It is one of the few products that works in removing blue green algae.
