Hey everyone, I have a spare 4ft light fixture and wondered what those blue lights are called that promote nocturnal fish to come out?
Would be interested in getting one. Can you get them from somewhere like home depot and what are they called?

Thanks

Ah thanks, I was thinking actinic but I think thats a marine light correct?

can moonlights be brought at home depot or other hardware stores or are they strictly a fish store only purchase?
cause I got my light fixtures from home depot and paid about 10% what the LFS wanted for the same size fixture

460nm actinic bulbs are what you'll want to use if you have a T8 or T5 fixture. "Moonlights" are usually LEDs

Moonlight are nothing but dim blue leds. You can get them from most any place online. They light the tank up just enough to kettle you see the fish. I suppose one 12" actinic would work as a moonlight on a monster tank, but Id rather just get the led setup. It would be cheaper, easier and look better.

I has those for my marineland LED lights. It's a switch that you can turn from regular white light to blue light. It really doesn't make a whole lot of deference. Maybe a little, but now a whole lot. My payara still isn't as active and my pleco may snoop around a little but I still don't get the full nocturnal activity from them.

My bichirs love my marine land led lights. They came with my 55 gallon setup

This is a pick of my marineland LED with the moon light on. My tank is next to my bed do i like to fall asleep with this light mode on so I can still see into the tank. Its pretty cool so if recommend it.

PS: sorry for blurry pic. My iPhone refuses to take dimly lit photos clearly. It always blurs them which can be extremely annoying.

An actinic isn't just for marine. It is one of the lights recommended for corals though.

Actinic lights bring out the best colors in fish or corals, if you were to have "glo-fish" that light would IMO make them the best looking.
