Okay so my yellow lab is about 3 inches maybe a bit more, and the blue peacock is almost the same in size. Im almost positive my blue peacock is a male just by its behavior (raising top fin and chasing fish around tank, and it just looks like it would be a guy) and my yellow lab and him* are always swimming together and rubbing against eachother. I hardly think that theyre of mature age but could this be signs of an early pair? ive never seen them chase eachother away and they respect eachothers space but are usually together.
is this just what fish do?

pics? it can be difficult to tell male from female for yellow labs, but it does sound like you may have a pair. keep in mind though that african cichlids are harem spawners, so the male will not participate in caring for the fry, and could stress out the female if she is holding and refuses to breed again with him. add a picture or two (or even a video) and we could probably answer your question better

this picture very poorly demonstrates how they swim together, and the blue peacock has been putting his top fin up which is pretty big and slopes down and then points up near the end. this was taken about a week ago :grinno:

Hope you have a big tank, The 2 fronts will get 10 to 12" while the Venustus can get up to 16 and is a huge predator. The blue Peacock looks to me to be the newest Hybrid called a Sunset Peacock. They cam out of Florida where a Farmer there had 2 Species get mixed together. They are showing up all over the USA in LFS. I would be guessing your Yellow lab is a female. Which when she begins her spawn cycle you will have some aggression between males. My money is on the Venustus!

the venustus will be okay for atleast a year, and the frontosa wont be 12 inches for like 4 years atleast. i do plan on upgrading within that timespan and if the venustus becomes too aggressive hell be finding a new home.
i hope i have a blue peacock and not a hybrid, anyone know for sure? better pics wil come

Here is a link to a pic of a Sunset Peacock. They are a cross between a firefish and a Ngara Flametail.

You can see some favor more red and some are more blue

if your female lab is holding eggs and those are all the fish in the tank with her, than yes, the peacock is the father. feel free to raise fry, i would love to see what the look like! just dont allow the fry to reproduce (some hybrids are ok, but purposefully breeding hybrids could be problematic if uneducated or unresponsible) and if you sell/give any away, make sure the person getting them knows they are hybrids and shouldnt try selling/breeding them as anything other than hybrids.

keep me updated, i love F1 hybrid progressions! in fact, i'm raising some kennyi/red zebra hybrids that are proving to be really pretty and unique!

There is several blue peacocks with red on them too. Plus a few Red peacocks have a blue face. Can you post a pic of the fish?
