Id had it for about a week. Think its in a 2gal tank right now with water, sloped gravel, some leaves and peices of wood. Anything I can buy from the pet store that it will eat? I have read online slugs etc, Iv got slugs in there, put some flies in there few hours ago. No clue how long, id say something like 3.5"

Aren't they a threatened speices in some areas? I don't know, I could have them confused with something else. If you're going to keep it, you could try pinhead crickets and wingless fruitflies.
 
How much water is in the tank? These are a terrestrial species, only going into water to breed or drink if needed. A tank with some dirt, logs and a water dish would be a better setup. Make sure the tank stays damp. They only eat food that moves so live crickets and such will be needed.
As a side note the blue spotted is not protected in IL but its close relative the Jefferson's salamander is, they look very similer. Are you sure on your ID?
 
Yep, that's the species I was thinking of Sandtiger. I know that the two look pretty similar.

Get us a pic and we'll identify it for you. Jefferson’s have long snouts and long toes compared to the Blue Spotted.
 
We call refer to Hynobius tokyoensis as the blue spotted sometimes, but assume you are talking about something native?

hi Seth, oh those we don't get around so much lol. Ambystoma laterale are beautiful. These are the ones that hybridise with the jeffersons aren't they... I remember now. Didn't they give the hybrids their own scientific name?
 
Yes, the two species do cross. Partly the reason why they are portected in the first place IIRC. Don't know if the hybrid has a scientific name but that would bring them up to species status.
 
Yeah... I can't remember if they were given a seperate identity or not. It might have been in "discussion" at the time, it was a while ago. When in some areas it took DNA analysis I believe...
