Thank you very much for the compliments... and sorry it took me so long to get around to posting them.
None of my Blue males 'blacken' at all when spawning. They Blue gets Deep, but not much deeper than normal... although he is one of my lighter males... I prefer deep Blue ones with solid black markings and those are the one's I breed. This guy is not a breeder which is why he's paired off witha Blue female.
I've had at least 3 Blue females give me fry... the one pictured above is the only one that didn't blacken up when spawning (I have no idea why)...
This is what my other Blue females looked like with young fry
Same Fish w/ Gold mate & fry
Same fish in pre-spawning colors
I don't have any adult pics of her except when breeding, sorry...
TrashCan... yours is a young male just coming of age... I often call this their "ugly stage". He will grow out of it and grow into his adult coloration. Most of my males have done this as they hit sexual maturity. Puberty does that to a guy
I've also seen them lighten up considerably after this stage... as well as stay a nice deep blue with distinguished black patterns (the way I like em)
Most people buy a small group and are lucky to get one or two to stay alive...
When I started I was buying larger groups (8~12) and using UV lights which kept most of them alive until they started hitting sexual maturity, at which time I lost a few to aggression and rehomed the ones I didn't want to spawn. Because of this method I was fortunate enough to see many more babies become young adults.
I told ‘em on the Blue Dempsey forums to do it that way... but very few listened...
But that's okay, I can't brag, many of them are much better at keeping Blue fry alive
PS - and thanks for the additional compliments guys
