Green sunfish? okay i believe you... never kept either.

are there any special needs for these things to help growth?

The will easily double in size every 45 days up until 6" given enough water table.

i have to disagree here, this seems like an extreme exaggeration... there is no way they will double in size in a month and a half. like i said, i've had mine for almost a year and its almost tripled in size. if it were to double in size every 45 days until 6", it would be nearly 10 inches by now.

Up until around 5-6", but certianly not after that point! Keep in mind that in a spring fed pond >150' diameter 5-15' deep what # of gallons would that equate to? My 50,000 gallon swiming pool is not 1/10th that size! From 1" to 4" the mort rate is astronomical (probably 90+%). If they failed to achieve this growth rate (up to ~ 5-6" level) they would never survive the LM bass to perpetuate the species! The late October through late march growth rate is virtually non-existant in the natural pond (Maryland) environment. Doubleing from 1/2" to 1" is considerably LESS then 45 days. 1" to 2" should also take less then that. The 2" to 4" is where the rate may be slightly longer then 45 days. Three sets of 45 days incriments is all the natural time span growth can be achieved in their natural environment.

If they fail this simple growth requirement, they do not see the following spring.

Aquarium without extreme mortality turnover can not even be compared to the need for growth in their natural environment. You probably also will not dump "literally" a ton of red mosquito larve into your home aquarium in June for them to gorge themselves on. Nature will every year without fail.
