Sunfish can be mixed with cichlids, but just like other cichlids they are individuals so you have to be prepared to intervene. I have sunfish, including a bluegill, with some mildish CA ciclids and some tough SA cichlids, growing out to go in my big tank I will build. So far they get along quite well. I think it is also really rare to see a sunfish over 10 inches in captivity, despite the size some reach in the wild. I wish more people would try them, even with cichlids. Some of my brighter colored sunfish outshine most my cichlids in color!
