I'm not sure if this is even a cold water fish so please feel free to move this thread if not. Has anyone here ever kept one of these? I got one for free from Petsmart the other day that had been mistakenly shipped in with some other fish. It's about 3 inches long with some very cool facial markings I took him and put him in my 55. He's chilling now. Does anyone else here know anything about keeping these fish?

I used to have a few that i catch few year back.. I just keep them in a tiny pond outside in my backyard. Never really kept them inside tho.. When i had it, they were very easy to take car of and love eating goldfish and market shrimp..

Are we sure its a bluegill ?? no offense but when i first started keeping natives, all sunfish species were bluegill . If you could post a pic it would be nice so someone could positively identify your fish, then it would be easier to correctly help you with the info you need to properly provide for the fish, as well as lots of more info. Thanks for reading all this rambling.

Yes there cold water fish they do best in a tank with no heater but can be kept at tropical tempratures for a short period of time no more then a few months

if you live where its semi cold then they can be kept in captivity nicely here in my basement it stays 68-72 during the summer and 50-60 during the winter

All sunfish are awesome. Post a pic or do some research to find out what species you have. IME, most hitchhikers in feeder tanks are green sunfish. What other fish do you have in there with him.

Here are some pics I took with my crappy phone cam. That, coupled with the fact the fish is shy as hell made it har to get a good pic. Let's see if these help..

Im not an expert but I say not a bluegill.

I have him in there with some toughies (minnows) it's a 55 gallon tank that I'm just about done cycling. Will he eat the minnows? He's definitely a green sunfish.
