Not wanting this to turn into a big flame debate but I must ask,who here has kept large rtb or such on aspen or care fresh.Ive always used carefresh but the color options suck and I notice its a bit dusty.Its never bothered my snake as far as I can tell but it bothers me now for some reson while cleaning it.Aspen just seems like it gets icky as soon as its wet.It looks better though.I saw some new stuff today Im going to look it up,another paper product.

I've never had issues with aspen. IMO, any substrate is icky when wet, unless its supposed to be wet.
I guess I meant that the carefresh kind of more absorbs it but when I see aspen wet it looks like it dosnt and it seems all sloppy.Does it retain moisture ok or does the water just slosh around it?
well I changed my boas substrate to aspen for now.I wish it was darker in color but oh well.I noticed how dusty the carefresh actualy is while changing it so if you have herps that are sensetive to dust then I may be taking back my recomendations for it.However my boa was in it for years and no problems,I think the dust bothered me more than it.I dont think its a harmfull product though,its just recycled paper.As long as you guys say the aspen is safe from hands on experience then Im gonna have to trust you on this,really wish I could use something more dark or natural to their habitat.
the only cypress mulch Ive seen so far is those long cuttings.I was thinking more of a soil looking substrate but I see what you mean by the darker color.I didnt see it however at the store,is it more at garden shops?Maybe I can mix the two.I only see the pics on the net and most looks like long shavings that wouldnt be as easy to burrow in.
yeah i get my cypress mulch at the garden centers or sometimes grocery stores and gas stations carry them in spring. here, take a look at this thread. go down to the last pic of mine and you get a good idea of how it looks. thats my iguana (well found it a different home last yr). i think the mulch is dark there cause i sprayed it down while she was eating for humidity. imo aspen molds over to quick when wet.

so you think boas would want to burrow in that stuff.Seems like it packs alot tighter.I may mix some in with my aspen anyways,use the rest in my yard,lol.My iggys cage way way back looked just like that,lol.
