If you look at some of my other posts you will see some of his tank mates. Most are pretty chunky however with what ive seen him eat he could def tackle some big prey items. He has a pike cichlid with him that is very swallow-able who he just disregards.

I am looking to learn, mate. So do others. Kolt has been recently thinking about a catfish comm including an apurensis: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?571604-Predatory-Catfish-Comm and could use your info too.

I expect nothing but if you kindly list the inhabitants and their sizes, it will help as the info on these cats and their behavior in captivity is scarce. I've never kept mine 3 with fish they could swallow, so IDK.

There's no better way to learn then by gathering as many personal experiences as possible and I definitely would like to hear more about tankmates as well TheeEmotionalPayara. I actually didn't know about any of the tankmates other then the Pike TBTB till I saw TEP's response to you. After I did a search of TEP's posts and it seems as though the tankmates of the Apu are a Pink Tail Chalceus, Flagtail Prochilodus, Pleco and a Brycon not to mention again the Pike. Is that correct TEP? If so I can understand why some of it works. The Brycon, Chalceus and Flagtail probably rarely if ever go into the strata the Apu inhabits, combine that with their serious speed and agility they would be a hard if not impossible target for the Apu except maybe under the cover of night. Still a well fed Apu probably barely patrols the bottom of the tank never mind the upper water strata at night. As for the Pleco, I'm guessin' who would really want to eat one of those as it'd be like eating a fishy pinecone so the Apu probably pays him no mind, probably. The Pike in my opinion is the biggest surprise as a working tankmate. Between their aggression and the Apu's crankiness and them inhabiting the same water strata for the most part, I'm surprised there's no trouble.

TBTB, I'd be glad to share my own experience with these guys so far. As you know I had one who had gotten to about 12 inches before his demise. I got him around the 6 inch mark and he was co-hab'ed with an Oscar 6 inch and a Red Devil 5 inch. The Devil never bothered the O but for some reason had a hate on for the Apu. The Apu basically didn't bother anyone at the 6 inch mark and was harassed by the Devil. The Apu grew quickly to 12 inches out pacing the O and the Devil and at the 12 inch mark ate the Red Devil but left the O alone. The O and he co-hab'ed with no problems after that despite the Apu being large enough to eat the O. Once I moved the Apu to a bigger tank with 3 stingrays(2 Retics and a Marble Motoro) he for some reason tried to prey on them and successfully ate 2 stingrays and was killed by the third who also died from the Apu's attack.

Fast foward to now, I've got a 3 inch Apu comm'ed with my Tarantsy who range from 1.5 inches to 4.5 inches as well as with Geophagus Abalios 4 inches and Red Spot Severums 5 inches. When I forgot to feed him he has preyed on two of the small Tarantsy. Other then that he keeps to himself wedged behind a UV filter and has to be handfed Silversides(hate that he hasn't taken pellets for me yet). I did though get to see him in action, he hid upside down under a rock that made up the roof of a cave I made and all I could see was the reflection off his eyes. When anything got close he pushed them away with an open mouth doing no damage till the smaller Tarantsy approached at which point he pounced and devoured them. Presently he's passed up Tarantsy that I feel he could eat, preferring only the smallest of them. Maybe that boldness happens with age or he actually thinks of the bigger Tarantsy as tankmates.

I'm glad I could help. I just saw your thread so I'll swing over there and see if I can offer some advice on top of the personal experience.

Yes, ok. I live in and Apartment, so tank size is my biggest concern.. The largest i cant get, that dosnt fall trough the floor is a 530l 160 x 55 x 60 Cm. But in like 5 months - 1 year i'll be moving, and i'll be able to get larger tanks :) I'd love if youd swing by my thread and give some advice.

Not sure if my previous comment came off wrong or abrasive however that was not the intention. Just redirecting to some of my past posts with pictures of his tank mates so others could get a sense of size and scale with who the begging blob is living with. I guess that's the downfall of typing versus speaking. Sorry for any confusion. Here is what I, in my own experience with keeping this guy so far, have been able to observe/surmise:

--->Vastly greedy, massive mouth, belly easily expands to allow maximum consumption of prey
--->Mainly active at night but when food is in the tank he is out and about
--->Loves cover/especially in his PVC tubes/seems to like tight/snug places
--->In my experience was easy to ween off live feeders/pigs out on worms, smelt, tilapia, pompano, shrimp/no luck on prepared foods unless snuck into his pieces of fish
--->Begs for food when he sees me, does headstands in the corners, will roll upside down in his pipe (my guess is it helps with digestion)
--->Not restricted to the bottom of the tank by any means/constantly hovers against the glass or suspends himself head pointed up in the middle of the water column at night in the flow of the powerhead waiting to strike
--->Has a very fast and engulfing strike and his large paddle-like tail lets him move with real bursts of speed when he needs to
--->Never seen any aggression with his tank mates nor have any come up missing or with wounds as if they injured themselves fleeing him or freed themselves from his jaws
--->The pike and him are a weird odd couple. Often shared the same tube when the blob was smaller. Pike will still try and enter the tube on occasion or cuddle with him at the bottom of the tank. The blob is generally oblivious to him
--->He has shown he is capable of eating chunks of food as wide as his head and half as long as he is
--->He came into the importer with a fellow blob and they constantly fought and squabbled (I have ambitions of trying my hand at doing a group in a large, indoor pond type setting with tons of nooks and caves and some powerful flow at the top of the water column/would love to pull off a miracle and get some babies)

Hope this info was a little helpful to anyone with some interest in these guys. They are truly a fascinating and interactive fish!

In terms of his interactions with his tank mates:
-Flagtail: no issues, much too tall for him to be able to tangle with at this point in time
-Brycon: always on the move and a real jerk himself/he tends to avoid the blob when he is hovering in the water
-Pleco: another jerk/pretty territorial/he will chase the blob from time to time, however now that the blob has surpassed him in size he mostly lets the blob do as he pleases
-Pike:indifferent/shared same tube at times/could devour him but chooses not to for what ever reason/pike isn't really aggressive himself
-Pinktail: so fast it isn't funny/skittish and surface dweller/always on the go so he wouldnt be an easy meal for anyone
-Cigar Shark: big and thick so no way he could be grabbed/gentle giant and just minds his own buisness/neither bother each other

Big thanks to Kolt and TEP! Fascinating read and a good source of future reference.

I compiled 11 links (of what I relatively quickly considered the best for the purpose... at my hand) on Cephalosilurus in this thread: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?573595-Curious-about-the-Jelly-Cats

TEP, yeah, sorry, mostly the shortcomings of a written, a bit hasty exchange. Lazy me didn't want to play nice and be a detective researcher :) IDK how many tanks you have and it appears to me rather senseless guessing the fish sizes, relative or absolute. You offered a superb report and I much appreciate it. Please, if you will, do come back to this thread with updates and pics a few times a year.

Hi Guys, good thread you got here. I too have an apurensis, and is currently alone in his tank. He's about 8-9 inches. I also have an 8 inch L330 Watermelon panaque, that i really would like to mix in with him. Do you think it will work out? How big was your pleco TheeEmotionalPayara? and what kind?
