Whats going on at Boeing? It´s a big topic here in Japan that the Boeing 787 is in so much trouble. The two big national airlines of Japan ANA and JAL are both loyal customers of Boeing. Both airlines buy almost complety Boeing planes and share a long tradtions in cooperating with Boeing. Both airlines are also often the ones who get the first planes delievered when a new model comes out. Japan is such an important customer for Boeing that they give many contracts to japanese corporations and even involve ANA and JAL in the development of new planes. But that relationship got serious cracks now.

The Boeing 787 is a desaster right now for both airlines and the trouble is so big that it was even debated in our parliament (diet). First there was a 3 year delay. Then one JAL 787 catched fire at an airport. Just few days later an ANA 787 burned as well. Another 787 from ANA had return to Japan because several systems malfunction. A cockpit window cracked. A 3 month grounding of all 787 followed and Boeing said it solved the problem. JAL and ANA demanded several billion $ compensation already. As negotiations between Boeing and the two airlines went further, just few days ago a 787 from Ethiopean airlines catched fire on the ground...

Now the CEO from ANA said in an interview that the airlines will order more than 40 new planes and takes into consideration to order Airbus. That would be a heavy blow for Boeing. JAL also showed interest in the new Airbus. Analysts wonder if the two mayor customers of Boeing just want to press more money out of Boeing for compensations or if they really want break up a decades long alliance.

I personal don´t know whats going wrong with the 787 and can´t understand what went wrong. Boeing has an excellent renomee in Japan. Almost our entire fleet is Boeing. The new planes we get from Boeing from older models like the famous 747 show no problems at all and are the typical high quality. The 787 has a real cool design but her renomee is burned in Japan. It is really bad. Some people even ask which plane flies their route and cancel if it is a 787. There were even rumors that JAL would transform it´s 787 into freighters and don´t use them for passenger service at all. The ongoing problems with the airliner have massive media coverage here in Japan:

I really hope they fix all those issues, because i think it´s a really nice plane. But i have no clue what they can do to fix its renomee. I must say it would be wired if our airlines switch to Airbus. Airbus are cool planes but we are so used to Boeing. I already know that JAL will use a 747 at my flight to USA this autumn and i love that plane^^. But i must say i would feel not so comfortable if a 787 would be used.

How come you guys don't build airplanes?

The market is full. There were plans in the 70th to enter the civil airplane market. They were dropped later. The market is already filled with Boeing and Airbus. The "jetset" market is filled from Bombardier and Embraer. It would be incredible hard to get our foot into that door. As far as i know it was thought to be not rentable.

In the beginning I thought the same thing.
