HI All,

I have been keeping American Chiclids now for about a year..

I have a 7ft Aquarium with quite a lot of bog wood in, I also use Sera super peat. I noticed the other day when I did some water tests that the ph was 6 of even a little lower. Is this simply because of the bog wood or is it the super peat ??? Im sure that the ph has never gone that low before..

Also does it mean that the more bog wood there is, the lower the ph ???

Many thanks for your help..

Both peat and bogwoods release a lot of tannic acids. Yes, tannins are the cause of the decrease in pH. The number of bogwood is less important to the amount of tannins leached as the amount of tannins leached by bogwoods placed in the tank will diminish over time.

Do you think that maybe I should loose the peat for the time being ????
It's fine. Did you boil the bogwoods?

i never boiled my bogwood i just put it in a bucket of hot water over night then did that every day for a week. The ph was 6.0 for about 4month which was fine for my amazon stylee tank. the water is clear now 7month on with nothing happening to the ph.

Sorry, when I saw that you were the most recent poster, I thought for sure that your post would include a dirty joke about wood.

Anyway, boiling isn't necessary to get rid of all the tanins, but it does expedite the process.

I would lose the peat for now and see what happens. Take out the peat and do a water change. Then check the ph and let it go for a day and check it again. That should give you and idea of you are. Good luck.
