Sorry, when I saw that you were the most recent poster, I thought for sure that your post would include a dirty joke about wood.

Anyway, boiling isn't necessary to get rid of all the tanins, but it does expedite the process.

What cichlids are they? for sa you want that low ph,for most ca not so much.

You may want to put some crushed coral in your filter to slowly raise your ph and kh.
