Great pics.

I have a D40 and have been trying shutter priority with a high ISO or just setting the camera to speedlight, but my pictures do not seem to come out as clear as I would like. Please could you offer any suggestions as to where I could improve?

set it to auto mode (the iso)
and the shutter speed will then depnd on the lighting in the room
and then you can take good pics by just point and shoot
