bogwood/driftwood for starving pleco

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Haha, thank you!!

I did go back to where I got him from. And believe it or not, but they had all kinds of driftwood and bogwood ABOVE their aquariums......I had to ask what they were feeding the big plecos, and the owner mentioned driftwood which was right above me, just didn't see it. So....you know what I did.....and let me tell you what?? Mr pleco has been on it for the first 1 1/2 hrs out of the 2 hrs that I brought it home!!!!

I also bought veggie clips and marine algae inhanced with garlic for Mr Pleco, but he's much more interested in the wood.

Thank god I saved him....he is a beauty. I'm gonna have to put up a pic asap for him to officaially "join" the club here

I just wanted to say that after all that I did, the veggie clips, cukes, garllc enticed food, spreading eggwhite over a rock then sprinkly flake food on it, driftwood, sinking tablets.....after all of that I discovered that he LOVES bloodworms, and is surviving and thriving. He has claimed a big tree stump as his own. Quiet defensive, actually VERY defensive. I will post a pic tmrw.

Now that he's established in the tank, his color's starting to turn.....to a greenish white....but he's healthy and all. His black color is very deep, yet the greenish contrast is very, um, noticable. I'm not sure what that means....

Is blood worms ok as the only source of food for a pleco? I never see him on the driftwood or on the glass anymore now.

No. Bloodworms alone is not a sufficient diet nor is it suitable as a staple. It is loaded with too much proteins responsible for several bloat cases particularly among the vegetarians.

I truly wasn't expecting this as I feed frozen bloodworms to the rest of the tank, including my achara catfish. I noticed over the last 2 weeks tho that the pleco will just lay in his spot and literally just suck the worms in.

Maybe I can try something else that will sink and I can shred into fine little pieces for him. I've never had this much trouble trying to feed a fish before

My plecos eat zucchini, romaine, spinach, melon and some of the fish and shrimp pieces designed for everyone else. The royals spend most of their time on and require wood. Good job on getting him to eat. I usually put the food in shortly before lights out and weigh down with stainless skewers.

as I love updates, I thought I'd update this thread of mine...Mr Algae eater died a week ago, totally unexpectedly as I was too busy with school, work, and kids to notice. Hubby was feeding that tank and such. We're guessing he died from old age as we had him for a lil over 3 yrs and he was larger when we brought him home. he was a dang good cleaner though
