bogwood/driftwood for starving pleco

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Maybe go back to where ever the pleco came from and ask what it was eating. Is there any indication the pleco could be sick? That could be another possibility.

well, everytime I get a new fish, I always ask what they feed them so I know. However, I've noticed whenever I get a bigger fish like this one, it usually belonged to someone else so the petstore doesn't even know what it eats, or if it's eating. I picked this certain pleco from the others cuz he looked really good and dark, and was always working on the glass.

Pleco didn't eat any of the food I dropped in last night. He's turning more splotchy too. I actually thought about taking him back to the petstore, but then I knew that would be a death sentence for him. I'm still trying...

His eyes are clear, belly's not sunken in, parameters are good, he has hiding spots (altho he's the 2nd to the biggest thing in there!)

I have a feeling it's a losing battle. I'm not giving up though. I stopped last night and got eggs to make a lil' treat for him from the eggwhites, and I'm gonna try to sink them dang cukes!

how should I cut the cuke up? wedges, slices, lil' pieces....sorry, I"ve never done this for a pleco. The strangest thing I had to do so far is handfeed hotdogs to my ashara catfish! Even that tho, we had to figure out what he would eat.... same situation as the pleco, won't eat commercial fish food

I cut a chunk a few inches long and then slice it in half lenghway's and use a strip of lead to poke through the skin. For just 1 plec i'd just cut an inch thick slice i alway's give it a rinse incase of pesticides aswell .

k, thanks bunches for the responses. I put the cuke in a couple hours ago and shut off the lights. He hasn't gone near it altho it's in his cubby spot. My oscar's been interested in using it as a toy tho...

I made the eggwhite with flake food combo on a rock. It should be almost dried. I'm going to drop that in tonight.

If these don't work, I don't know what else to try

Someone mentioned peas....how would I go about doing that one?

I just wanted to give an update....I put in 3 pieces of cukes weighted down with plant anchors last night. Weren't touched. My bala sharks went nuts over the eggwhite flack rock I made.

I just within the last hour made my own veggie clip and stuck it in his hangout spot.....HE ATE!! I noticed his color's coming back. Let's see how this holds up now

I want to say thank you for all of the good ideas. He'd probably be dead now if it weren't for you guys

Hi, I have a 4 year old Common Pleco. I hardly ever see him eat but he is 15" so he must eat sometime! Don't bother to weigh down the cucumber (unless you want the other fish to get it) a Common is capable of eating it while it floats. Mine loves mushrooms. I use the smallish white mushrooms. Just peel the outer skin off, remove the stalk, rinse it under the tap and pop it in the tank. It will float but just leave it, the Pleco will find it. There won't be much left by morning. I also put in algae wafers and other general food that the other community fish eat. I also feed peas once a week. I use frozen ones and just get a few out of the saucepan while I'm cooking, peel the outer skin off and put them in the tank. These are good because they help to clear the fishes' system out. All my community fish love them too. HTH. :)
