No, it didn't look like that. It just looked like any normal young pine tree. The base was maybe 1 inch in diameter when it died. It seemed to grow really slow no matter how much or how little fertilizers it got. The tallest I let it get was about 2 feet. It took about 5 years to get it's red trunk.
if you guys have guestions,go to bonsaitreeforums.com ,i just joined it and the guys on it are great,no bashing or arguing so keep it tame,these guys are very melow.Extreemly helpfull and nice.that pic above is incredible,good luck trying to replicate that one lol.thanks for all your interest,ive started several plants and so far the azelea is the jerk of the group.the junipers are the coolest so far,san jose juniper is a good one.Ive got a dwarf pomagranite and an olive im trying.Im wanting to do the black pines next and just found a killer nursery at a hardware store of all places in lake isabella ca that must be ran by a guy that is in to this too because he hase like every plant thats great for this and tons of them.an old gent in bako is giving a 2 day class next month im going to join in on.There are a lot of tricks and nesesities for doing it with success and i dont want to kill all my plants so i figured its worth it,alot of good books at the book store too.
