Dont go with barbs and tetras... Ive went trough this to and i bought 300 neon tetras and after a week i got so bored so I bought three datnioides and putted in the tank just to eat up the tetras lol...

Buy something really rare or raise a small fish so it gets big so you have something you can be really proud of :)

That made me laugh mate, were they really that bad?
I've done the grow out with an Oscar, I loved that fish but he got so big he ate my 7'' blue lobster, a juvenile fahaka puffer and countless others. I just think that one or two big fish is a waste of a huge tank.

Yeah haha they where really boring...

Buy a group of cichla and one datnoid and grow them out :) The cichlas are awesome in group and the datnoids to best on their own :) Ive had a group of datnoids and they where always unstable but when they are alone their awesome :)

How did you oscar survive when eating a fahaka puffer? They are poisonous. A poison thats called tetrodoxin. to humans it is over 1000 times deadlier than cyanide

Yeah I was expecting to find him floating the next morning, I did notice a slight discolouring for two days but that was about it.
Cheers for the suggestions guys ill have a look

sounds like you like lil' stuff.. and lots of it... go planted if you already haven't.. its like coral tank... constant fiddling w/out quite the $$$ as sw. Go as big or as small as you want... lighting, co2... shrimp, inverts in general... fish... 220 is a lot of room to play with.

from what your saying sounds like "big fish" aren't for you but plenty of tiny oddballs that are challenging.

Yeah monster mini, that's the direction I'm heading. I've had my fill of big fish. I got rid of my last two today, but I can't add plants until I get rid of my 8 inch blue lobster. He can eat £20 worth of plants in a night :). Ill have to research low light plants as the tank is 3ft deep and my standard light ain't gonna cut it.

I would go the wetpet route , with a small bioload. Choose your favorite fish with or without dithers grow it out yourself . Think of it as a true pet and do not stock the tank heavy because there is nothing worse than being bored with the hobby and having a crap load of tank upkeep! As the fish grows you will gain a bond and the light tank work should give you time to do other things until the love return then you can crank things up! Jmo
