Born without a tail????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a female con who..as far as i can tell was born with out a tail...she was rescued from a big box store ..they gave her to me because she was defective..it does not look like a cut.

she holds her own and even beats up her male..she is a mean little fish and is faster than her male..

Yes i am breeding her...none of her fry have ever come out with the deformity..but then again most of them are fed as wigglers and the rest at about 1/4 inch..

I think fish who can survive and thrive should not be culled but to each there own ...when i got her allot of people told me to put her down.
..I think yours is very cute^_^..I my opinion these types of fish have some of the best personalitys.
(excuse the water stains)
she was about an inch when i got her..and is pushing 3 now.

That is great!! Thanks for the pic and info. Glad she is doing so well and gives me hope with my fish too.

Thanks for sharing Kristanathaniel and Kaosu! It's nice to see something different, not the typical normal fish you see everywhere. :D

Good luck with them and keep us posted.

I think this one is a genetic deform. It's anal fin and dorsal fin almost connect. It actually looks just like Kaosu's convict. This one's parents both died for what appeared to be no reason. They were fine one day then the next morning they were dead. So I don't know if they would have produced more like this little tail less one I have named Badonkadonk.

I would assume this in an injury from being born the mouth of a fish. In the wild it would have been eaten most likely by a predator. If you are keeping the fish do whatever you want. However keep in mind that a breeder would usually not keep this fish, or would trade/give it to a person who would agree not to breed it. Culling is important for breeders to keep good lines of fish. If this were a fish in the cares program it would be irresponsible to keep a bad line going when preserving a fish. Now I am not an antihybrid person by any means, I am an anti lying to make money person. As long as keepers are responsible it is fine, just remember the playing god remarks are silly. We setup little glass worlds for our fish and they depend on us for everything. So please do not put religion into an argument. Also remember fish are not people and when you breed animals you have to kill them sometimes, just check with a farmer. Also remember that when most house pets are suffering people have them put to sleep. So lets not compare fish to people. A tailless fish is more common than you think, and in the african cichlid (especially mouth brooders) it is common for this to happen with young females or large broods of fish.

We are not breeders. We are not in this hobby for the money. I kept this fish because it was different and it has it's own personality. My husband tells me on a daily basis that these are just fish and are not pets but as long as my Yellow Tail Acei come to the surface and let me pet them for as long as I want I will call them pets. This fish will never be breed. If there was a way to fix a fish I would do it for this one. When we do sell our fry due to lack of tank space we would never lie about their origins. Our fish are kept in display tanks in our home. When one of the females spit out the fry or we strip her we put her in a different tank for a few months so that she is not producing often. As mentioned many times before. I just wanted to know if anyone else had a fish like mine and if so how long did it live. I am attached to this little fish as some would be a dog or cat. Yes farmer often have to put down animals but that is because keeping a useless animal will not help to turn a profit. My financial lively hood does not reside on my fish. I have had to put a dog down because of the lack of quality in her life. I have also owned a dog with a wheel chair. This fish is healthy and active so I see no reason to "cull" it.

i agree.. he is happy... and your happy.. why not enjoy it... no reason to do anything to any animal unless it is suffering ...

I agree too!

It's your tank, your fish. You do what you want. As a person who breeds fish, that fish would not be in my fishroom for long. I would have culled it as soon as I noticed it's deformity. To each his own.
